Hebrew is the language of the Hebrew Bible, the scripture at the root of both Judaism and Christianity. For most of two thousand years it was not an everyday spoken tongue. From roughly the second century CE until the late nineteenth century, Hebrew survived mainly as a language of prayer, study, and writing rather than daily conversation. Beginning around 1880, largely through the work of Eliezer Ben-Yehuda and the Hebrew-language schools that followed him, it was deliberately revived as a spoken vernacular. That revival succeeded to a degree with almost no parallel in history. Hebrew is now the everyday language of millions of people in Israel and is spoken by roughly fifteen million people worldwide.
The naming tradition that comes with this language is unusually rich in meaning. Many Hebrew names are theophoric, meaning they are built around a name or title for God, so that the name states something about the divine. The element -el means "God," and it turns a name into a short sentence. Gabriel means "God is my strength," Daniel means "God is my judge," and Michael is a question, "who is like God." A second element, -iah or -yah, refers to Yahweh, the personal name of God in the Hebrew Bible. Elijah means "my God is Yahweh," and Isaiah means "Yahweh is salvation."
These names traveled far beyond their origin. Through Judaism, Christianity, and centuries of Bible translation, Hebrew names spread across Europe and then the wider world, and many became some of the most common names in the English-speaking world. They were reshaped so thoroughly along the way that their source is now easy to miss. John comes from the Hebrew Yohanan, Michael from Mikha'el, and Mary from Miryam, yet few parents choosing them today would think of them as Hebrew. The origin is genuine even when it is invisible.
The Hebrew names in our library show these same patterns at close range. Aaron, Abigail, Adam, Hannah, Isaac, Leah, Sarah, Noah, and Nathan all come from the Hebrew Bible, and several carry meanings that were once plainly readable. The theophoric endings are the easiest thread to follow once you know them. Gabriel, Ariel, and Adriel all close on -el for God, while Elijah and Micah reach back toward the -iah and -yah forms tied to Yahweh. Where the meaning of an individual name is uncertain or debated, that is noted on the name's own page.
