məˈθaɪ.əs
A Greek form of the Hebrew Mattityahu, 'gift of Yahweh'; the fuller spelling of Mathias.
Matthias is the Greek rendering of the Hebrew Mattityahu, 'gift of God,' and a cousin of Matthew. In the Book of Acts, the remaining apostles cast lots and chose Matthias to replace Judas among the twelve. The double-t spelling is the German and Dutch form, also borne by the Renaissance king Matthias Corvinus of Hungary. Matt and Tias are the shorts.
The standard spelling is Matthias. Common variants include Mathias, Matthäus, Matías, but Matthias is the most widely used form.
