Turkish names

Turkish is a living Turkic language spoken by around 80 million people, mainly in Turkey and on Cyprus, with large communities in Germany and across western Europe carried there by 20th-century migration. It is the official language of Turkey and one of the official languages of Cyprus. Modern Turkish grew out of Ottoman Turkish, which was written in an Arabic-based script until the alphabet reform of 1928 replaced it with a Latin-based alphabet, a change that sharply raised literacy. Turkish names often draw on the natural world, and light, the moon, and the strength of animals are recurring themes, giving the names in this collection a bright and grounded character.

The moon runs through several of these names. Ay is the Turkish word for moon, and it sits at the root of Ayla, commonly linked to the halo of light around the moon and used much like the word moonlight. Ayla also arose independently in other places, most visibly as the name of the Cro-Magnon heroine in Jean Auel's novel The Clan of the Cave Bear, so its worldwide popularity is convergent rather than tracing to a single source. Aylin shares the same root ay and is usually glossed as moon halo. Both names carry the quiet, luminous quality that Turkish naming so often reaches for.

Two more names round out the collection. Aslan is the Turkish word for lion, an old term of power once applied to rulers, and it is widely known from C. S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia, where Lewis took the Turkish word directly for his great lion. Alara is associated with a Turkish water-fairy legend, a luminous spirit tied to lakes and rivers, though the provenance of that legend is debated and its story is poorly documented in older sources, so the popular telling may be modern. Taken together, Ayla, Aylin, Aslan, and Alara show a naming tradition rooted in light, the moon, and the living world.
