Italian names

Italian is the living language of Italy, spoken today by tens of millions of people. Of all the Romance languages that grew out of Latin, Italian is the one that stayed closest to its parent. It descended most directly from the spoken Latin of the Roman world, evolving gradually in the centuries after the Western Roman Empire fell in the fifth century. Italian names carry Latin and Christian roots and a musical sound. Most masculine names end in -o, and most feminine names end in -a or -ia. Many come straight from Latin. Antonio descends from the Roman family name Antonius, and close forms of it are shared across Spanish, Portuguese, and the other Romance languages. Others reached Italian through Latin from older languages. Alessandro is the Italian form of Alexander, from the Greek Alexandros, meaning defender of mankind. Angelo comes from the Latin angelus, itself borrowed from a Greek word for messenger.

Saints' names and the Renaissance both shaped the tradition. Angelo and Antonio carry the weight of Christian devotion, and Gianna is a short form of Giovanna, the feminine of Giovanni, which is the Italian form of John and traces back to Hebrew. Leonardo, the name of the Renaissance painter and inventor Leonardo da Vinci, comes from the Germanic name Leonhard, meaning brave as a lion, which entered Italian through its Latin form Leonardus. Matteo is the Italian form of Matthew, from a Hebrew name meaning gift of God.

In the United States, an Italian-American naming tradition has kept these names in steady use, and several have surged in recent decades.
