Breton names

Breton is a Celtic language spoken in Brittany, in northwestern France. It arrived with British migrants who crossed the Channel in the early Middle Ages, which is why it belongs to the same branch of Celtic as Cornish and Welsh rather than to French. Breton is still spoken today, mostly in western Brittany, though it is now endangered, with far fewer speakers than in past centuries and active revival efforts to keep it alive. Its long Christian history left a deep mark on its names.

Many Breton names are the names of saints. Brittany honors a large number of local holy figures, and their names passed down through families and parishes for generations. Breton names often join short native word elements, and because the older spellings varied and the language has changed over time, the exact meaning of those elements is not always certain. Harvey comes from the Breton personal name Haerviu, also recorded in forms such as Aeruiu and Hoiarnviu. It is usually explained as two elements joined together, though sources differ on which. One reading takes it from haer, meaning battle, plus a second element read as worthy or keen, giving a sense of battle worthy. Another takes the first element as hoiarn, meaning iron, with the second read as blazing or eager. The name was also borne by a sixth century Breton hermit remembered as a patron saint of the blind. Settlers from Brittany, who fought and moved alongside the Normans, brought the name to England around the Norman Conquest of 1066, where it later became both an English surname and a given name.
