Free-spirited names

Some names carry the idea of freedom in their roots. They point to a person who is unbound, self governing, and answerable to no one but themselves. This is an old idea. In early Germanic and medieval society, being free was a legal status, the line between a person who owned their own life and one who did not. The names in this group reach back to that status. Charles, and its feminine form Charlotte, come from a Germanic word meaning free man, and by extension a common man of the free class. The path runs through the Old English ceorl and the Old Norse and Old High German karl, all naming a man who was free but not noble. The Latin form Carolus carried the name across Europe, which is why the family it heads is so large. Charlie is the friendly short form. Carlos, Caroline, and Carolina all descend from the same free man root, so they share this meaning even when the connection is not obvious on the surface.

Frances and Francesca mean free in a more roundabout way. They trace to a word meaning Frenchman, tied to the Franks, the Germanic people whose name is linked to freedom. The link is real but indirect. Some scholars connect Frank to a word for a spear or javelin, and the free reading may come from the Franks being the free people in Frankish Gaul rather than from the name itself. Frankie is the easy short form. Maverick is plainer in its independence. It is an English word for an independent, unbranded thinker who will not follow the herd, and it comes from Samuel Maverick, a nineteenth century Texas rancher who did not brand his cattle, so unbranded strays came to be called mavericks.
